Rules

A permanent card is a card with one or more of the following card types: artifact, creature, enchantment, land, or planeswalker.

If the permanent is an illegal target by the time Chaos Warp tries to resolve, it won't resolve and none of its effects will occur. No library will be shuffled and no card will be revealed.

If the revealed card is a permanent card but can't enter (perhaps because it's an Aura with nothing to enchant), it remains on top of that library.

If the revealed card is not a permanent card, it remains on top of that library.

The owner of a token is the player under whose control the token was put onto the battlefield. If a token is shuffled into a player's library this way, that player shuffles before revealing the top card of that library.

Rules

Even though these lands have basic land types, they are not basic lands because "basic" doesn't appear on their type line. Notably, controlling two or more of them won't allow others to enter the battlefield untapped.

However, because these cards have basic land types, effects that specify a basic land type without also specifying that the land be basic can affect them. For example, a spell or ability that reads "Destroy target Forest" can target Canopy Vista, while one that reads "Destroy target basic Forest" cannot.

If one of these lands enters the battlefield at the same time as any number of basic lands, those other lands are not counted when determining if this land enters the battlefield tapped or untapped.

Exotic Orchard #155 Land

Rules

Exotic Orchard checks the effects of all mana-producing abilities of lands your opponents control, but it doesn't check their costs. For example, Vivid Crag has the ability "{T}, Remove a charge counter from Vivid Crag: Add one mana of any color." If an opponent controls Vivid Crag and you control Exotic Orchard, you can tap Exotic Orchard for any color of mana. It doesn't matter whether Vivid Crag has a charge counter on it, and it doesn't matter whether it's untapped.

Exotic Orchard doesn't care about any restrictions or riders your opponents' lands (such as Ancient Ziggurat or Hall of the Bandit Lord) put on the mana they produce. It just cares about colors of mana.

Lands that produce mana based only on what other lands "could produce" won't help each other unless some other land allows one of them to actually produce some type of mana. For example, if you control an Exotic Orchard and your opponent controls an Exotic Orchard and a Reflecting Pool, none of those lands would produce mana if their mana abilities were activated. On the other hand, if you control a Forest and an Exotic Orchard, and your opponent controls an Exotic Orchard and a Reflecting Pool, then each of those lands can be tapped to produce {G}. Your opponent's Exotic Orchard can produce {G} because you control a Forest. Your Exotic Orchard and your opponent's Reflecting Pool can each produce {G} because your opponent's Exotic Orchard can produce {G}.

The colors of mana are white, blue, black, red, and green. Exotic Orchard can't be tapped for colorless mana, even if a land an opponent controls could produce colorless mana.

When determining what colors of mana your opponents' lands could produce, Exotic Orchard takes into account any applicable replacement effects that would apply to those lands' mana abilities (such as Contamination's effect, for example). If there are more than one, consider them in any possible order.

Humble Defector's ability can be activated any time during your turn, including in response to a spell or ability.

If Humble Defector is controlled by a player other than its owner, and its controller leaves the game, the effect giving that player control of Humble Defector ends. Humble Defector will return to the control of the player still in the game who most recently controlled it.

If Humble Defector isn't on the battlefield as its ability resolves, but the target player is still a legal target, the ability will resolve. You'll draw two cards, even though the player doesn't gain control of Humble Defector.

If Humble Defector's owner leaves the game, Humble Defector humbly leaves the game along with that player.

Can never affect the colored part of the cost.

If this card is sacrificed to pay part of a spell's cost, the cost reduction still applies.

The effect is cumulative.

The generic X cost is still considered generic even if there is a requirement that a specific color be used for it. For example, “only black mana can be spent this way”. This distinction is important for effects which reduce the generic portion of a spell's cost.

The lower cost is not optional like with some other cost reducers.

This can lower the cost to zero, but not below zero.

A spell you cast that’s blue and red costs {1} less, not {2} less.

Activating the ability creates a replacement effect that acts like a shield, replacing the next time Nightscape Familiar would be destroyed that turn. This shield works against effects that try to destroy Nightscape Familiar or lethal damage that would be dealt to Nightscape Familiar.

Nightscape Familiar can regenerate even if it isn’t in combat, it’s already tapped, or it’s undamaged.

You can activate the regeneration ability even if Nightscape Familiar isn’t at risk of being destroyed.

If Xantcha can't attack for any reason (such as being tapped or having come under that player's control that turn), then it doesn't attack. If there's a cost associated with having it attack, the player isn't forced to pay that cost, so it doesn't have to attack in that case either.

If a player creates a token that's a copy of Xantcha, the player who creates the token is its owner, not the player under whose control it enters the battlefield. This is a change from previous rules.

The player who draws a card when Xantcha's last ability resolves is the player who activated the ability.

Xantcha's controller may activate its last ability. In this case, the same player loses 2 life and draws a card.

Xantcha's first ability is a replacement effect that modifies how it enters the battlefield, not a triggered ability. Players can't take actions (such as activating its last ability) while Xantcha's on the battlefield before it's controlled by another player.

In a multiplayer game, if Xantcha's owner leaves the game, Xantcha leaves the game with them. If Xantcha's controller leaves the game, Xantcha is exiled. This is a change from previous rulings due to Xantcha's updated wording.

Gaining control of a permanent doesn’t cause you to gain control of any Auras or Equipment attached to it.

If one of the target permanents is an illegal target when Role Reversal resolves, the exchange won’t happen.

If the same player controls both permanents when Role Reversal resolves, nothing happens.

Role Reversal’s effect lasts indefinitely. It doesn’t wear off during the cleanup step, and it doesn’t expire if the permanents stop sharing a permanent type after Role Reversal has resolved.

The permanent types are artifact, creature, enchantment, land, and planeswalker. Supertypes, like legendary, aren’t permanent types. For example, you can’t exchange control of a legendary creature with a legendary planeswalker.

You don’t have to control either target permanent.

If Path of Ancestry's last ability produces two mana (most likely due to Mana Reflection), spending those two mana to cast creature spells that share a creature type with your commander will cause two abilities to trigger. Each of those abilities will cause you to scry 1. You won't scry 2. This is true whether you spend the mana on one creature spell or two.

If you cast your commander with mana from Path of Ancestry, and your commander hasn't somehow lost all of its creature types while on the stack, you'll scry 1.

If you don't have a commander, Path of Ancestry's ability produces no mana.

If your commander has no creature types, it can't share a creature type with any spell that you cast.

If your commander is a card that has no colors in its color identity, Path of Ancestry's ability produces no mana. It doesn't produce {C}.

If you have two commanders, the last ability adds one mana of any color in their combined color identities. When you spend that mana on a creature spell that shares a creature type with either of your commanders, you'll scry 1.

Your commander's creature types are checked immediately after you cast a creature spell spending mana from Path of Ancestry's last ability. They aren't set before the game begins, and they may not be the same types your commander had when you activated that ability.

Rules

A mana ability is an ability that produces mana, not an ability that costs mana.

If a permanent spell is exchanged this way, its new controller will control the permanent it becomes.

If the exchange doesn't happen but the spell is still a legal target, its controller may choose new targets for it.

If the target spell or the target creature is an illegal target as Sudden Substitution resolves, the exchange won't happen. If both targets are legal but are both controlled by the same player, the exchange won't happen.

In a multiplayer game, if the controller of one of the objects leaves the game after Sudden Substitution resolves, the effect that gave them control of the spell or permanent expires. If the spell is still on the stack, the player who gains control of it this way can't choose new targets for it.

The exchange lasts indefinitely. It doesn't expire for the spell if the creature changes zones or leaves the game, or vice versa.

The noncreature spell is still on the stack after exchanging control, and the creature is still on the battlefield.

After a spell with split second resolves (or otherwise leaves the stack), players may again cast spells and activate abilities before the next object on the stack resolves.

Casting a spell with split second won't affect spells and abilities that are already on the stack.

If the resolution of a triggered ability involves casting a spell, that spell can't be cast if a spell with split second is on the stack.

Players may turn face-down creatures face up while a spell with split second is on the stack.

Players still get priority while a card with split second is on the stack; their options are just limited to mana abilities and certain special actions.

Split second doesn't stop triggered abilities from triggering, such as that of Chalice of the Void. If one does, its controller puts it on the stack and chooses targets for it, if any. Those abilities will resolve as normal.

Even if you don't plan on exchanging control of any permanents, if you can choose two legal targets when the ability triggers, you must do so. If you can't, then you don't choose any targets.

If either one of the targets becomes illegal (because it leaves the battlefield or for any other reason) by the time the ability resolves, the exchange won't happen. If both targets become illegal, the ability doesn't resolve.

You choose two targets such that as a set, all of the targeting conditions are met. Although players may respond to Blasphemous Act once it's been cast, once it's announced, they can't respond before the cost is calculated and paid.

Blasphemous Act's ability can't reduce the total cost to cast the spell below {R}.

The total cost to cast Blasphemous Act is locked in before you pay that cost. For example, if there are three creatures on the battlefield, including one you can sacrifice to add {C}, the total cost of Blasphemous Act is {5}{R}. Then you can sacrifice the creature when you activate mana abilities just before paying the cost.

To determine the total cost of a spell, start with the mana cost or alternative cost you're paying, add any cost increases, then apply any cost reductions (such as that of Blasphemous Act). Rules

An opponent gaining control of it is part of the replacement effect and happens immediately, even if you are in the middle of resolving the spell or ability and it has more instructions to perform after taking damage.

In contrast, the Sigil of Corruption ability is a triggered ability, and it won't go onto the stack until after the spell or ability that tried to deal damage finishes resolving.

In some cases, a single spell or ability will deal damage to this creature multiple times during its resolution. In that case, a new player gains control of it each time, its ability triggers once each time, and the appropriate players control those triggers. After that spell or ability is done resolving, all of those triggers are put onto the stack in turn order, starting with the active player (or the next player in turn order if the active player isn't involved). Usually, this means that the cards are drawn in a different order than the control-changing effects took place.

You lose control of Khârn the Betrayer when it leaves the battlefield or another player gains control of it.

It only produces one mana even if the land can produce more than one.

The ability can be activated if the opponent has no lands that produce mana, but the effect will not be able to generate any mana.

This works even if the opponent's lands are tapped. It only checks what kinds of mana can be produced, not if the abilities that produce them are usable right now.

Fellwar Stone checks the effects of all mana-producing abilities of lands your opponents control, but it doesn't check their costs. For example, Vivid Crag has the ability "{T}, Remove a charge counter from Vivid Crag: Add one mana of any color." If an opponent controls Vivid Crag and you control Fellwar Stone, you can tap Fellwar Stone for any color of mana. It doesn't matter whether Vivid Crag has a charge counter on it, and it doesn't matter whether it's untapped.

Fellwar Stone doesn't care about any restrictions or riders your opponents' lands (such as Ancient Ziggurat or Hall of the Bandit Lord) put on the mana they produce. It just cares about colors of mana.

The colors of mana are white, blue, black, red, and green. Fellwar Stone can't be tapped for colorless mana, even if a land an opponent controls could produce colorless mana.

When determining what colors of mana your opponents' lands could produce, take into account any applicable replacement effects that would apply to those lands' mana abilities (such as Contamination's effect, for example). If there is more than one, consider them in any possible order.

Rules

Abilities that trigger whenever a player gains life can’t trigger and effects that would replace gaining life with another effect won’t apply because it’s impossible for players to gain life.

If an effect sets a player’s life total to a specific number and that number is higher than the player’s current life total, that part of the effect won’t do anything. (If the number is lower than the player’s current life total, the effect will work as normal.)

If you control Witch Hunt, you are not a legal target. If there are no legal targets available, the ability is removed from the stack and you retain control of Witch Hunt.

Spells and abilities that would cause a player to gain life still resolve, but the life-gain part has no effect.

The target is chosen at random as you put the last ability on the stack. Players can respond to this ability knowing who the target is.

To choose a target at random, all possible legal targets must have an equal chance of being chosen. There are many ways to do this, including assigning each possible legal target a number and rolling a die.

Rules

If a creature affected by Kardur's ability could legally attack multiple players and/or planeswalkers, its controller chooses who it attacks.

If a creature an opponent controls can't attack for some reason (such as being tapped or having come under its controller's control that turn), then it doesn't attack. If there's a cost associated with having it attack, its controller isn't forced to pay that cost, so the creature doesn't have to attack in that case either.

If a creature an opponent controls doesn't qualify for any of the above exceptions and can attack, it must attack a player other than you if able. If the creature can't attack any of those players, or if there are no such players, it must attack you or an opposing planeswalker.

Kardur's first ability affects all creatures your opponents control, including any that enter the battlefield after the ability resolves.

Kardur's last ability will trigger no matter who controlled the attacking creature and no matter who it was attacking.

Each additional cost and associated mode in the text box is also preceded with a + indicator. These symbols also have no rules meaning and serve only to remind players that the listed costs are additional costs.

Gaining control of a permanent doesn’t cause you to gain control of any Auras or Equipment attached to it.

If a mode requires a target, you can select that mode only if there’s a legal target available. Ignore the targeting requirements for modes you don’t choose.

If a spell with spree is copied, the effect that creates the copy may allow you to choose new targets. You cannot choose new modes.

If all targets for the chosen modes become illegal before a spell with spree resolves, the spell won’t resolve and none of its effects will happen. If at least one target is still legal, the spell will resolve but will have no effect on any illegal targets.

If an effect allows you to cast a spell with spree “without paying its mana cost,” you must still choose at least one mode and pay the associated additional costs.

If one of the target permanents is an illegal target when Shifting Grift resolves, the exchange that permanent is involved in won’t happen.

If the same player controls both permanents involved in a single exchange when that exchange occurs, nothing happens to those permanents.

No matter which modes you choose, you always follow the instructions in the order they are written.

No player can cast spells or activate abilities in between the modes of a resolving spell. Any abilities that trigger won’t be put onto the stack until the spell is done resolving.

Spells with spree have a + (plus sign) indicator in the upper right corner of the card frame. This has no rules meaning and serves only to remind players that at least one additional cost is required to cast the spell.

The effects of Shifting Grift’s modes last indefinitely. They don’t wear off during the cleanup step, and they don’t expire if one of the target permanents stops having that permanent type after Shifting Grift has resolved.

The mana value of a spell with spree is determined only by its mana cost (in the upper right corner of the card). It doesn’t matter which modes you choose or which additional costs you pay, including any additional costs imposed by other effects.

You can’t choose the same mode more than once.

You choose the modes as you cast the spell with spree. Once modes are chosen, they can’t be changed.

You don’t have to control any of the target permanents.

You must choose at least one of the listed modes and pay its associated additional cost in order to cast a spell with spree.

Rules

A chapter ability doesn't trigger if a lore counter is put on a Saga that already had a number of lore counters greater than or equal to that chapter's number. For example, the third lore counter put on a Saga causes the chapter III ability to trigger, but chapters I and II won't trigger again.

As a Saga enters the battlefield, its controller puts a lore counter on it. As your precombat main phase begins (immediately after your draw step), you put another lore counter on each Saga you control. Putting a lore counter on a Saga in either of these ways doesn't use the stack.

Each symbol on the left of a Saga's text box represents a chapter ability. A chapter ability is a triggered ability that triggers when a lore counter that is put on the Saga causes the number of lore counters on the Saga to become equal to or greater than the ability's chapter number. Chapter abilities are put onto the stack and may be responded to.

For the chapter II ability, either target can have card types the other does not. For example, you can target an artifact land and an artifact.

For those two abilities, you don't have to control either target.

Gaining control of a creature doesn't cause a player to gain control of any Auras or Equipment attached to it.

If multiple chapter abilities trigger at the same time, their controller puts them on the stack in any order. If any of them require targets, those targets are chosen as you put the abilities on the stack, before any of those abilities resolve.

If one of the target permanents of the chapter I or chapter II ability is an illegal target as that ability resolves, the exchange won't happen. If both targets are illegal, the ability doesn't resolve.

If the same player controls both target permanents as the chapter I or chapter II ability resolves, nothing happens.

Once a chapter ability has triggered, the ability on the stack won't be affected if the Saga gains or loses counters, or if it leaves the battlefield.

Once the number of lore counters on a Saga is greater than or equal to the greatest number among its chapter abilities, the Saga's controller sacrifices it as soon as its chapter ability has left the stack, most likely by resolving or being countered. This state-based action doesn't use the stack.

Removing lore counters won't cause a previous chapter ability to trigger. If lore counters are removed from a Saga, the appropriate chapter abilities will trigger again when the Saga receives more lore counters.

After the ability resolves, you control the spell. Any instance of “you” in that spell’s text now refers to you, “an opponent” refers to one of your opponents, and so on. The change of control happens before new targets are chosen, so any targeting restrictions such as “target opponent” or “target creature you control” are now made in reference to you, not the spell’s original controller. You may change those targets to be legal in reference to you, or, if those are the spell’s only targets, the spell will doesn’t resolve for having illegal targets. When the spell resolves, any illegal targets are unaffected by it and you make all decisions the spell’s effect calls for.

Gaining control of a spell and changing its targets won’t cause any heroic abilities of the new targets to trigger.

If Perplexing Chimera leaves the battlefield or the spell leaves the stack before the triggered ability resolves, you can’t make the exchange.

If you gain control of an instant or sorcery spell, it will be put into its owner’s graveyard as it resolves, fails to resolve, or is countered.

In some unusual cases, you may not control Perplexing Chimera when its triggered ability resolves (perhaps because the triggered ability triggered again and resolved while the original ability was on the stack). In these cases, you can exchange control of Perplexing Chimera and the spell that causes the ability to trigger, even if you control neither of them. If you do, you’ll be able to change targets of the spell, not the spell’s new controller.

Neither Perplexing Chimera nor the spell changes zones. Only control of them is exchanged.

You make the decision whether to exchange control of Perplexing Chimera and the spell as the triggered ability resolves.

You may change any of the spell’s targets. If you change a target, you must choose a legal target for the spell. If you can’t, you must leave the target the same (even if that target is now illegal).

You may exchange control of Perplexing Chimera and any spell cast by an opponent, not just one with targets.

If the target spell has a variable number of targets, you can't change how many targets it has.

If the target spell has damage divided as it was cast, the division can't be changed although the targets receiving that damage still can. The same is true of spells that distribute counters.

If you choose new targets for the target spell, the new targets must be legal.

You don't make any decisions about new targets for the spell until you win the flip.

Rules

If you leave the game, any creatures you've goaded remain goaded until your next turn would have begun. They don't immediately stop being goaded and don't remain goaded indefinitely.

Once a creature an opponent controls has been legally blocked, activating Sly Instigator's ability won't change or undo that block.

Attacking with a goaded creature doesn't cause it to stop being goaded. If there is an additional combat phase that turn, or if another player gains control of it before it stops being goaded, it must attack again if able.

Being goaded isn't an ability the creature has. Once it's been goaded, it must attack as detailed above even if it loses all abilities.

If a creature you control has been goaded by multiple opponents, it must attack one of your opponents that hasn't goaded it, as that fulfills the maximum number of goad requirements. If a creature you control has been goaded by each of your opponents, the creature must attack an opponent (rather than a planeswalker or battle), but you choose which opponent it attacks.

If the creature doesn't meet any of the above exceptions and can attack, it must attack a player other than the controller of the spell or ability that goaded it if able. If the creature can't attack any of those players but could otherwise attack, it must attack a planeswalker an opponent controls, a battle an opponent controls, or a player who goaded it.

If, during a player's declare attackers step, a creature that player controls that's been goaded is tapped, is affected by a spell or ability that says it can't attack, or hasn't been under that player's control continuously since the turn began (and doesn't have haste), then it doesn't attack. If there's a cost associated with having a creature attack a player, its controller isn't forced to pay that cost, so it doesn't have to attack that player.

Rules

A disguise ability lets you cast a card face down by paying {3} and announcing that you are using a disguise ability. Any time you have priority, you can turn a face-down permanent with disguise face up by paying its disguise cost.

A permanent that turns face up or face down changes characteristics but is otherwise the same permanent. Spells and abilities that were targeting that permanent and Auras and Equipment that were attached to that permanent aren't affected unless the new characteristics of the object change the legality of those targets or attachments.

A token's owner is the player who created it.

Any time you have priority, you may turn the face-down creature face up by revealing what its disguise cost is and paying that cost. This is a special action. It doesn't use the stack and can't be responded to. Only a face-down permanent can be turned face up this way; a face-down spell cannot.

At any time, you can look at a face-down spell or permanent you control. You can't look at face-down permanents or spells you don't control unless an effect instructs or allows you to do so.

Because face-down creatures don't have a name, they can't have the same name as any other creature, even another face-down creature.

Because the permanent is on the battlefield both before and after it's turned face up, turning a permanent face up doesn't cause any enters-the-battlefield abilities to trigger.

If a face-down creature loses its abilities, it can't be turned face up with a disguise ability because it will no longer have a disguise ability (or a disguise cost) once face up.

If a face-down spell leaves the stack and goes to any zone other than the battlefield (if it was countered, for example), you must reveal it. Similarly, if a face-down permanent leaves the battlefield, you must reveal it. You must also reveal all face-down spells and permanents you control if you leave the game or the game ends.

The creature spell is a 2/2 creature spell with ward {2} that has no name, mana cost, or creature types. The resulting creature is a 2/2 creature with ward {2} that has no name, mana cost, or creature types. Both the spell and the resulting creature are colorless and have a mana value of 0. Other effects that apply to the spell or creature can still grant it any characteristics it doesn't have or change the characteristics it does have.

The face-down spell has no mana cost and a mana value of 0. When you cast a face-down spell, put it on the stack face down so no other player knows what it is, and pay {3} to cast it. This is an alternative cost.

Turning a permanent face up or face down doesn't change whether that permanent is tapped or untapped.

You must ensure that your face-down spells and permanents can be easily differentiated from each other. You're not allowed to mix up the cards that represent them on the battlefield to confuse other players. The order in which they entered the battlefield should remain clear, as well as what ability caused them to be face down. (This includes disguise, cloak, and in games involving older cards, morph and manifest, as well as a few other effects that turn cards face down.) Common methods for doing this include using markers or dice, or simply placing them in order on the battlefield.

If the target creature is an illegal target as Red Death’s ability tries to resolve, it won’t resolve and none of its effects happen. You won’t add any mana, and the creature’s controller won’t draw a card.

If, during a player’s declare attackers step, a creature that player controls that’s been goaded is tapped, is affected by a spell or ability that says it can’t attack, or hasn’t been under that player’s control continuously since the turn began (and doesn’t have haste), then it doesn’t attack. Each of the copies will have the same targets as the spell it's copying unless its controller chooses new ones. That player may change any number of the targets, including all of them or none of them. The new targets must be legal. If, for any target, they can't choose a new legal target, then it remains unchanged (even if the current target is illegal).

If the spell that's copied has an X whose value was determined as it was cast, the copies will have the same value of X.

If the spell that's copied has damage divided as it was cast, the division can't be changed (although the targets receiving that damage still can). The same is true of spells that distribute counters.

If the spell that's copied is modal (that is, it says "Choose one —" or the like), the copies will have the same mode or modes. You can't choose different ones.

In the case where the spell being copied grants one or more players extra turns, those extra turns are added one at a time. When the current turn ends, the most recently created turn will be taken first.

Starting with the next opponent in turn order (or the active player, if that player is one of your opponents), each opponent in turn order decides whether or not to copy the spell and, if they do, whether or not to choose new targets. Then, if that player did choose to copy the spell, the copy is put onto the stack. Finally, you copy that spell at least once (hopefully more, if the mayhem was tempting enough) and choose new targets for your copies if you wish. This means that your copies of the spell will resolve first, followed by the copies created by your opponents in the opposite order in which they were created.

Tempt with Mayhem can't target itself. There are limits, after all.

The controller of a copy can't choose to pay any alternative or additional costs for the copy. However, effects based on any alternative or additional costs that were paid for the original spell are copied as though those same costs were paid for the copy.

The copies are created on the stack, so they're not "cast." Creating a copy won't cause abilities that trigger when a player casts a spell to trigger.

Alexios can attack planeswalkers its owner controls and battles its owner protects.

Alexios can't be sacrificed for any reason. If an effect instructs you to sacrifice it, you can't and it remains on the battlefield. You also can't sacrifice it to pay a cost that requires you to sacrifice a creature.

If Alexios can't attack for any reason (such as being tapped), then it doesn't attack. If there's a cost associated with having it attack, its controller isn't forced to pay that cost, so it doesn't have to attack in that case either.

If Alexios is controlled by a player other than its owner and its controller leaves the game, the effect giving that player control of Alexios ends. Alexios will return to the control of the player still in the game who most recently controlled it.

If Alexios's owner leaves the game, Alexios leaves the game along with them.

If an effect instructs you to sacrifice a creature and you control any creatures other than Alexios, you must sacrifice one of those other creatures. You can't try to sacrifice Alexios.

The exchange occurs only if Conjured Currency and the target permanent are both on the battlefield and controlled by different players when the ability resolves. In addition, the target permanent must be one you neither own nor control. If any of these things aren’t true when the ability tries to resolve, the exchange won’t happen and neither permanent will change controllers.

The only legal target for Conjured Currency’s ability is a permanent both owned and controlled by another player, although it doesn’t have to be the same player. For example, a permanent owned by an opponent but controlled by your teammate (or another opponent) could be chosen as the target.

You don’t necessarily have to control Conjured Currency when its ability resolves in order for the exchange to happen. If another player has gained control of Conjured Currency while the ability is on the stack, and a third player controls the target (and you don’t own it), you may choose to have those two players exchange control of the relevant permanents.

If either the targeted player or the targeted permanent is an illegal target by the time the ability resolves, the ability does nothing. The player won’t gain control of the permanent.

This effect has no duration. The targeted player retains control of the targeted permanent until the game ends, the permanent leaves the battlefield, or an effect causes someone else to gain control of it.

You may target yourself with Bazaar Trader’s ability. Normally, this won’t have any visible effect. However, the ability would override an effect with a limited duration that gave you control of a permanent. For example, if you temporarily gained control of a creature with Act of Treason, targeting yourself and that creature with Bazaar Trader’s ability would then cause you to gain control of the creature indefinitely.

Abilities/Keywords

Rules

If Archfiend of the Dross is no longer on the battlefield as its upkeep triggered ability resolves, use the number of oil counters it had the last time it existed on the battlefield to determine whether you lose the game. You can't remove oil counters from it if it's not on the battlefield, so you won't lose the game if it had only one oil counter on it before leaving the battlefield.

If Archfiend of the Dross somehow loses all of its oil counters due to an effect other than its upkeep triggered ability, this won't cause you to lose the game until the next time that ability resolves.

Rules

If the ability doesn't resolve (either for having its target become illegal or because a spell or ability counters it), the mode chosen for that instance of the ability still counts as being chosen.

In some very unusual situations, you may not be able to choose a mode, either because all modes have previously been chosen or the only remaining modes require targets and there are no legal targets available. In this case, the ability is simply removed from the stack with no effect.

It doesn't matter who has chosen any particular mode. For example, say you control Demonic Pact and have chosen the first two modes. If an opponent gains control of Demonic Pact, that player can choose only the third or fourth mode.

The phrase "that hasn't been chosen" refers only to that specific Demonic Pact. If you control one and cast another one, you can choose any mode for the second one the first time its ability triggers.

Yes, if the fourth mode is the only one remaining, you must choose it. You read the whole contract, right?

You choose the mode as the triggered ability goes on the stack. You can choose a mode that requires targets only if there are legal targets available.
